I'll take the first question.
While reading the book, my answer is that I believe that the gods of are the ones who are deciding the victories of certain nations. The Gods are the ones who are deciding the fates of every heroes who wins and falls. But are those heroes who won and lost immaterial? For me its no. They're wins are decided by Gods(especially Zeus) but they are the ones who have done those things. In other words the God does not receive the praises, the hero receives it. But what about the ones who are lost, there are places in the underworld that people goes to when they die. The "heaven" in the underworld is called "Elysium". I learned this by reading a book entitle Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan. So all the heroes' hardships was for something.
